JOB TITLE:           Senior Support Worker  LANCHESTER COURT  

 

PURPOSE OF POSITION

 

  1. To support the Nurse in Charge /Manager to ensure the Support Workers and Care Assistants are carrying out all delegated tasks to a high standard.
  2. To support the Care Assistants to fulfil their roles and to feedback information to the Nurse in Charge any areas of concerns or positive interactions and outcomes.
  3. To assist in meeting the personal needs of the service users in a way that respects the dignity of the individual and promotes independence, including outings, skill development, etc.
  4. To help in the care of the service users physical environment and in the general day to day activities of the Home.
  5. To carry out the Home’s policies, practices and procedures.
  6. To work, for part of the time, on a one-to-one basis service users who may or may not have challenging behaviour.

 

DUTIES

 

  1. To help the service users to lead as full a life as possible, to organise activities for them, eg. handicrafts, games, reading, outings, etc.
  2. To assist/ensure that the emotional, physical, medical and spiritual needs of the service users are recognised, assessed and met, as far as possible.
  3. To fulfil the role of key worker and encourage the service users in taking decisions in matters which affect their lives.
  4. To be actively involved in Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) meetings and carrying out key worker roles; to include handing over information; communicating with outside services, for example, if instructed to do by the nurse, make GP appointments etc.
  5. To collaborate with families of service users, feeding back information and ensuring confidentiality is kept at all times.
  6. To follow the leadership of the Nurse in Charge of the shift and to work in partnership with the Nurse to ensure a high standard of care is being given at all times.
  7. To administer and record on all relevant documentation, residential medication packages.
  8. To contribute to the assessment of need of each service user in conjunction with the service user, relevant professional agencies and, where appropriate, the service users’ family.
  9. To assist in developing and carrying out an appropriate Care Plan which provides a satisfactory quality of life for that person, carrying out that programme and recording any appropriate information relating to same.  To report to senior staff any action/recommendations which have not been carried out.
  10. To assist in carrying out risk assessments appertaining to individuals and activities, and to ensure that all risk assessment proposals are carried out.
  11. To assist the Home Manager with supervisions and appraisals of care staff.
  12. To take responsibility for Health & Safety issues, eg. reporting any dangers to self and others, etc.
  13. To assist service users who need help with dressing, undressing, bathing and the toilet in a dignified manner.
  14. To help service users with mobility problems and other physical disabilities including incontinence.  Assisting with use and care of aids and personal equipment.
  15. Assisting/ensuring that good standards of food presentation are maintained, and those good standards of hygiene and cleanliness are maintained.
  16. To prepare and serve meals and assisting service users where necessary.  Helping to clear away the dishes afterwards. To make drinks, or help residents make drinks when required.  Clear away and wash up afterwards.
  17. To inspect, mend, launder and iron service users clothing or supervise them doing same if appropriate.
  18. To answer the door and telephone and greet visitors in an appropriate manner.
  19. To assist professionals, eg. nurse, physiotherapist, chiropodist if necessary.
  20. To read and write reports, taking part in staff and service users meetings and in training activities as directed, on or off-site.
  21. To read all relevant communications, sign, and carry out instructions.
  22. To report any changes in residents’ condition to the Nurse in Charge/ Manager.
  23. To record incidents to residents, staff or visitors in the Accident Book, or other relevant documentation.
  24. To record all complaints, comments, etc. appropriately and take proper action where possible, and report the matter immediately to management.
  25. To care for residents’ property and that belonging to the Home as directed.
  26. To care for equipment and report any defects to the Manager.
  27. To clean up spillage’s as they occur using appropriate equipment supplied and as specified in the Control of Infection Policy.
  28. To adhere to all aspects relating to confidentiality and not discuss the Company, service users, or other information which is acquired via the job, with others not connected to or who have no right to the information.
  29. To report any situations/concerns immediately to Nurse in Charge/ Manager.
  30. To be flexible and work to the benefit of service users, and to assist with any other duties if required.
  31. To ensure the provision of health care arrangements, which includes ordering, recording and administration of medication.

 

GENERAL

 

  • Attend mandatory training courses, on or off-site, as and when required. As this is a legal requirement of our sector for CQC and Local Authority Contracts the Company reserve the right to charge training costs to any employee who fails to attend either mandatory training or refresher courses without giving reasonable justification for their absence or sufficient notice of their non-attendance. Should the employee fail to meet the aforementioned requirements then additional action may be taken via the suspension or disciplinary route.
  • Maintain professional knowledge and competence.
  • Understand and ensure the implementation of the Company’s Health and Safety policy, and Emergency and Fire procedures.
  • Ensure the security of the buildings is maintained at all times.
  • Report to the Home Manager, or the Maintenance Department, any faulty appliances, damaged furniture, equipment or any potential hazard.
  • Promote safe working practices in the homes.
  • Ensure all equipment is clean and well maintained.
  • Ensure that all information of confidential nature gained in the course of duty is not divulged to third parties.
  • Adhere to all Company policies and procedures within the defined timescales.
